James Sunderland highlights need to distinguish, in law, those who come to UK legally

Following the Government update on the resettlement of Afghan nationals who were evacuated in Operation Pitting, James Sunderland highlights the need to distinguish, in law, between those who come here illegally and those who come here legally, so that we can do more for those who served alongside British forces in Afghanistan.

James Sunderland (Bracknell) (Con)

I thank the Minister for his statement. Does he agree that it is entirely right that we do all we can to support those who served alongside British forces in Afghanistan, and that it is right to distinguish in law between those who come here illegally and those who come here by invitation legally, so that we can do more for those on the ARAP (Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy) scheme?

The Minister for Veterans' Affairs (Johnny Mercer)

My hon. Friend is right; there is a fundamental difference. As he will know, there are veterans, service personnel and people working in the civil service who are sat around lunchtime tables this afternoon and would not be here were it not for the actions of this cohort, and we have a very specific duty to them. We have to balance that against competing demands, but we have made our commitments to this cohort of people. I have outlined today our clear and significant commitment to see through our duty to them, get them out of hotels and make sure we honour our commitments.
