We are at a critical juncture in the global fight against this awful disease. Recent investment has delivered the most robust interventions ever, including new UK developed vaccines, nets, medical support and insecticides, but the continuing challenges of Covid-19, apathy, funding, drug resistance and humanitarian crises through conflict, flooding and famine, threaten to force us backwards. Tragically, 619,000 people lost their lives to malaria in 2021 and one child still dies every minute.
But we are on the cusp of success. Continued investment in the Global Fund is essential, and this is a perfect opportunity for the UK to be the global leader for eradication, both within the Commonwealth and across the wider World too. Not only is this a humanitarian imperative, but the prospective economic and trading benefits of healthy populations in affected areas are huge. Malaria is the biggest killer of mankind ever. It is also getting ever closer to Europe due to climate but can be stopped by 2030.
