Our local education offer in Bracknell Constituency is excellent and I am proud that all 40 of 40 OFSTED eligible schools in Bracknell Forest are graded Good or Outstanding. It is no surprise therefore that the demand for places is at a premium, not least from neighbouring borough council areas, and that everything possible should be done to accommodate the wishes of pupils and their parents.
I was recently informed that the Year 7 entry at Edgbarrow School is over-subscribed for 2023/4 and that a number of children from the adjoining Wokingham Borough Council area may be disappointed, even though they reside within the catchment area. Over the weekend, I have corresponded with staff at Bracknell Forest Council, parents and the school itself to derive some clarity.
My initial observation is that Bracknell Forest Council is meeting its obligation to find places for all local Year 7 pupils. Whilst there is currently insufficient capacity at the school for the additional places required, it is still possible that agreement may be reached to absorb them. No promises can be made at this stage, and extensive negotiation will be needed with multiple stakeholders, but up front funding is likely to be required from Wokingham Borough Council to stand any chance of the Headteacher being able to meet the demand. Officials from Bracknell Forest Council, Wokingham Borough Council, local councillors and school staff will need to agree a plan prior to the appeals meeting on 16th May 2023 and I will be lobbying accordingly with both borough councils and the Department for Education.
